Ubuntu 9.04 issues

Hey everyone. I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 as a dual boot and am having some trouble getting a couple of things to work. I know nothing about Linux, but I'm trying to learn.

The computer I'm doing this with is the top desktop in my sig.

1) First, I can't get compiz fusion to run. I went here - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Co...r/CompizFusion and got everything to work except for the terminal command "compiz -- replace". When I enter that, I get this -

Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

ccsm works fine though - so I can configure it, but I can't get it to run...

2) So, I thought it could be a problem with my video card not having the right drivers (I'm just randomly guessing here). So, I downloaded "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_180.51-pkg1.run", but when I try "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run" in the terminal, I get

sh: Can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run

3) Also, Ubuntu keeps freezing on me (or at least the programs), and it takes a log out / in to make it run again.

Thanks!

Update - Through some additional googling I found that you only had to activate the driver, which I did. It's really cool how it suggests the necessary driver (and how that driver is actually the right one...).

Now when I launch compiz, terminal verifies everything but xgl - it says it is missing. I looked online and it looks like it hasn't been updated for Ubuntu 9.04.

Even though it got launched, I am still unable to actually make the compiz cube and expose-like functions work. Actually, I can't make any of the functions work. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? They're all enabled to the best of my knowledge in the config.

Got everything to work except for the cube by turning on visual effects.

I can't tell by reading if you have compiz on or not. If you go to System > Preferences > Appearance, Visual Effects tab then turn compiz on.

To use the extra features of compiz including the cube you need to install the compiz settings manager.

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

I do have it turned on, I believe. All the other visual effects are working, such as wall display and the expose function. Everything works fine except for the cube function.

Have you turned on the cube function for it to work? Just by turning on the Visual Effects doesn't make the cube appear. You need to install the compizconfig-settings-manager and turn the cube option on there.

Yes I did. That's how I turned on everything else - through the compiz configuration manager.

Ok, so the only thing I can think of at the moment is are you using the correct key combination to make the cube show up. Example, I think it's like Ctrl + Alt and mouse 1 or similar.

Yep, I believe so. I even changed the keys to see if I could make it work. The one thing I still don't get is why it said it couldn't find xgl when I loaded compiz. Could that be the reason? When I googled it, I found a couple of forum posts that said it was currently unsupported in Ubuntu 9.04.

Does that have any significance to my issue?
