Q's...Ubuntu on older hardware
I wanted to try to install Ubuntu onto my PC, but I wasn't sure if it would be compatible with my hardware. How can I find out if my older hardware is compatible?
Current PC Intel P4 3.2g Asus P4P-800MX 2 gig's RAM Nvidia 6700OC (I thnk that's right, I know it's PCI not PCIe and it was the best one I could find) OS Windows XP SP3 |

I tried to boot it up from the CD, (had to install the boot app) and it seemed to want to boot up, but then took me back to a Dos prompt. I wasn't sure if my drivers were up to date and/or compatible.

You could have possibly either gotten a bad download or the image did not burn correctly onto the disc. Did you make sure that you have the boot sequence in your BIOS set to "CD-ROM" first as well? Now, before you install do you have a partition made for the new OS on your HD or did you have a 2nd HD that were installing it on to?

I have an OS (XP) on the HDD, I was trying to boot from the CD so I didn't think that I needed a partition for it.
Thanks, Oryx, I'll give that a try. I want to wipe my second HDD, so I may wait until I do that and install Ubuntu then and give it another try if I can't get it to work. |

A. Create and install on a blank partition on the primary HD or B. Install on a secondary drive that is either blank or has a blank partition Last edited by mjkovis; 06-01-2009 at 11:25 PM. Reason: Cleared up a few sentences... |
