Old Tablet Pc
My Dad has an old table pc that he wants to be able to access the internet from. I do not know what the hardware specifications are but it runs Windows 3.x so It is not particularily modern. My question is, is there a basic Linux os that he could install to gain access to the internet. It has a built in modem but he needs software modern enough to access the internet.
(having a graphic interface would be good rather than just command line) |

Without knowing the ram and cpu, it's hard to give any meaningful advice. Getting dialup modems to work in linux is usually difficult unless they are true hardware modems, so you can expect some issues there. In general, any linux distro that will run on typical win 3.1 hardware will have a very spartan gui. You can take a look at tiny core linux and DSL linux:
http://www.tinycorelinux.com/ http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ If it's running windows 3.x, it could probably handle and upgrade to win98SE if you have an upgrade disk around. That might be your best bet along with an older version of firefox, if you have the ram to handle that. Firefox 3.x will not run on win9x but you can get older versions of firefox here: http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php Firefox version 2.x worked with win98 IIRC. |
