Exclamation Have ME and want to dual boot with Linux

Hi

I have Windows ME on my machine and everything seems to be going okay. I want to dual boot with Mandrake Linux. What is the best way of partitioning my hard drive? I currently have only the one partition that ME sits on. Would I need to use something like partition magic? Is there a freeware option? Can I run ME and Mandrake linux together?

Thanks

Haggis

- Yes you can use both Linux and Windows on the same hard drive

- to partition:
You could use FIPS (its on the Mandrake CD) to resize your windows partition. Partition Magic is good too .. except it costs $$. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE DOCUMENTATION FOR FIPS BEFORE U BEGIN.

- to dual boot, just setup mandrake, but dont install on your existing windows partition (this is after the aforementioned step), then install the bootloader (LILO), it should recognize windows and will give you the option at boot time.

- Do a search on this forum for more information on dual boot.

Cool dual boot

Haggis,

dual booting is cool, but one word of caution.

If you've never done it, it can be confusing and scary. Especially if
your spouse is looking over your shoulder.

Safest and easiest method, get Partition commander for about $25US,
it has a wizard for installing a new OS, which resizes safely, creates
the partition, etc etc.

2nd easiest, spend the $30US on the commercial CD of Linux Mandrake
v8.0. Again, it's all automated, I just like the results a bit less.

If you're not used to Linux/Unix, setting up the OS is a challenge, I
would never have completed it without the Redhat Package Manager, which
comes on the Mandrake CD.

Good luck
