This might sound naive, but since I don't use AOL I don't know the answer. It seems to me that AOL is a web "destination" of sorts. As near as I can tell you log on to AOL using a browser.Netscape is the predominant Linux browser. Netscape is owned by AOL. Simple logic would tell me that there shouldn't be any problem logging to AOL. But I don't know, I don't use AOL.

AOL requires a proprietary dialer to connect with. There was rumor awhile back of them making a Linux version of their software, mainly due to their alliance with Sun in making a competing Palm OS and set of utilities that go with that.

I dunno what became of it, though. I seem to remember it being leaked at one point, but I have no idea if the leaked version worked or not even.

I have been looking in to this and people are telling me that the linux version is called Gamera. You need to do something to the software in able for it to work. Someone also told me that you can download it from aol's ftp. I have found a linux program at ftp.newaol.com and am about to try it.

Again, at the risk of sounding very naive, why would anyone sophisticated enough to use Linux want to use AOL?

Have you even used AOL? Why does everyone who uses linux hate AOL? I know its expensive but it gives me the features that I need. Is it some Phad for Linux users to hate AOL? I don't know why everyone complains about AOL. I never get kicked off and my speeds are always good.

aol

I've never liked AOL, and it's not just linux people, and I'm sure it's not all linux people. For me it's mainly becasue of the price, the fact that you're paying and still getting ads asking you to buy things when you sign on like a free isp, getting kicked off a lot, slow speeds, and the overall beginner feel to it. I guess it's fine for new computer/internet users, but after a while I personally think it's time for a new isp. That's just my opinion anyway.

I don't hate AOL. I just asked a question. If you want to use AOL, fine. The reason for my question, was since AOL seems to market itself as a place for web beginners, and as you admit, its expensive, what about it attracts somebody as sophisticated as you? You have indicated it has a lot of features you like. Thats good enough for me.

All you have to do is open your browser in Linux, type in www.aol.com and you will come to a login screen. Yeah, I had aol back when it was still in version 4.

edit: I just reread your post and it seems you want to use the aol software in Linux. I don't know about that, so disregard what I said. Thanks.

If you like AOL you can still use it from a different ISP. It costs another $9 extra a month or so. Before I got my cable modem I was disconnected all the time. When I had it canceled they told me I could still use it from a different ISP. Since I had it cancelled and I have been using AT&T Broadband I enjoy the internet alot more. You have more versatility using a standard web browser. It isn't that people "HATE" AOL it is just more versatile not using it but it is very good for beginner internet users because it is very user friendly.

I've looked into that and its called Bring Your Own Access Plan (BYOA). It costs $13. Once I get my dsl it will cost 50 and another 13 is getting a little bit more than I want to pay. I think I will just scrap aol all togethor.
