Installer doesn't recognize cd
I'm trying to install Red Hat linux 7.1 but I have only the files (not the image) burned to a cd. The problem is that the installer doesn't recognize the cd. Is there a way to install it using just the files?
(downloading the image is out of the question) |

When you burn files to a CD it doesnt make it a bootable CD. (like copying command.com and related files to a disk does not make the disk bootable).
However, make yourself a bootdisk (using dosutils/rawrite) and you could still use the CD. HTH |

Thanks for the quick reply!
I forgot to mention that I already tried that (booting from a floppy using the disk image). It's when I'm inside the installer, where it asks you if you want to install off the cd-rom or the hard drive that it gives the error. It is reading the cd because when I click ok, my cd-rom light turns on and then back off. It then gives me the message "I could not find the Red Hat installation cd" or something like that. Thanks again. |

3 quick thoughts
1) is it an IDE CDROM device? 2) Is it on your IDE port? or on another controller? 3) Is the CD drive you are using the first CDROM device? Have u tried putting in the installation CD on anyother CDR device you may have, perhaps even a CDwriter? |

I've gotten that error message before. It happened to me when I tried to use a RedHat 7.1 bootdisk with a RedHat 7.2 cd, and another time on my other computer when I used a RedHat 6.2 bootdisk with a RedHat 7.0 cd.. So I'm pretty sure it is reading the CD-ROM just fine, but it doesn't like the cd. So make sure you have the redhat 7.1 boot disk, because other ones won't like a 7.1 cd. Where did you get only the files? I thought that you could only download the two image files, at least from redhat.com.

It does read the cd. I've pretty much given up on it though. I was looking around in the Red Hat forums and there are questions like mine but they have no replies so I'm guessing its impossible.
Thanks for the help though. |

Is the CDROM it on a 3rd party IDE controller? If so you might have to supply boot time parameters or even a bootdisk to get it to work

Nope no 3rd party controllers. It does read the cd rom but it rejects the disk.
