Hi Slim,

DVD: MPlayer, Ogle
MP3: FreeAmp

Which distribution are you using? The drive should be supported by now.

Just checked the supported hardware list on Mandrake's site and it lists many Pioneers DVD drives including the DVD-103s. I don't know what the difference between the drives is is, but it's worth trying anyway.

Ok. Thanks for all your help. But i need to ask for some more help.
Once again, I am brand new to Linux, and I have Mandrake 8.1

I downloaded xine, and I need some help installing them.

I extracted the files as below:
$ tar xvzf xine-lib.x.y.z.tar.gz
$ tar xvzf xine-ui.x.y.z.tar.gz

I need help with below instructions:
/**
Change to the xine-lib.x.y.z directory and configure
the source code for your machine and compile the code by typing:
$ ./configure
$ make

You may wish to use the ./configure --help command to see if you have
to setup any machine specific options.

Now, as the user root, enter the following command:

$ make all install

Before you can compile xine-ui, you may need to inform your system of
the location of the xine libraries, you may need to set the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to the directory you installed
the Xine library and/or run the ldconfig program.

Once the Xine library is installed, you can repeat these steps with
the xine-ui.x.y.z directory.
**/

1) How do i change to root? I did login at console. entered root at login prompt, and password, but it won't let me. Password works if I logout of KDE and login at the login menu, but not at the console.

2)

"Before you can compile xine-ui, you may need to inform your system of
the location of the xine libraries, you may need to set the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to the directory you installed
the Xine library and/or run the ldconfig program."

?????? - How do I set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable to the directory? What is the directory that Xine library gets installed to if i follow the above instruction?

3) Is there like a easy common procedure in installing programs in Linux? Or is it all different for each program, and is it always this difficult? Even though I'm sure I'll get used to it after a while.

Thanks a whole bunch.
