Question Linux and dual display?

Hi all,

In windows it is possible to extend your desktop onto a second monitor if you have 2 videocards and 2 monitors (or a dualhead videocard and 2 monitors). Is this possible in linux, or more specifically in the Mandrake 8 or Redhat 7.1 distros? If so, how? TIA.

Hi Floppyman,

Check out this link http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/3Dfx-HOWTO-3.html. I think it's what you might be looking for.

Thanks OOPS,

I'm curious now, does this only work with 3dfx cards or does it work with all types of videocards? Thanks again.

Wanted to re-read the how-to again, but the link isn't working now, 404 error. Lord I hate when that happens!!

I don't have any expirience with dual monitors or more modern vid cards, (still using my old ATI Xpert98 pci just fine). But I would think that if your vid chipset is supported, that it should work. The how to seemed general enough. But that ain't no gaurentee I know. I would give a shot.

Thanks again OOPS,

Don't worry your link works fine, just take the "." out after the .html. I also did some researching of my own and came across this:

http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/XF86Config.5.html

Now according to this it seems I will have to setup XF86config up manually if I want to use dual monitors. Am I on the right track? Thanks again.

That's what I get for trying to do things at 4am on 3 hours of sleep!!

Yeah, I read your link and you will have to edit XF86 by hand somewhere along the line. I think that you are headed in the right direction. If this is a fresh install, Mandy or RedHat may suprise you and do it for you, I don't know for sure though.

It seems that I just can't leave well enough alone most of the time. So when I'm messing around with my 'puter I often get to the point where it's "oops! maybe shouldn't a done that"

It's amazing how much I've learned that way.
