Red Hat 7.1 problems

This has happened to me twice now. For some reason, while I'm working and I try to save something, it'll tell me that my disk is full(and when I check it is)even though a moment before I had 700 mb left. Then when I restart, the GUI (XFree86) will fail to start. In the log file it says that it can't find some font path (the disk is still full at this point). After I delete something and run X -configure, I am able to get back in, but at 640x480 256 colours, which I seem to be unable to change. After I get back in, I have 700mb free again. I don't think its the swap file because its on a different partition.

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.
