Question Networking a PC and a Mac

I have a client who wants to network a PC (running Win2k) and a Macintosh (running OS 9). All she really wants is to hook both of them up to a linksys 4 port router to be able to share a cable internet connection - no file sharing needed. It sounds simple enough, but I seem to keep running into a TCP/IP error. When both machines are hooked up, the PC is totally unable to send email, and occasionally has problems with connecting to the internet. I originally thought that this would be a simple networking set up, but I must be missing something here on the Mac end - when the PC is hooked up by itself, it works just fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am also posting this to the networking forum.
