You got to have imwheel installed to make it work. Otherwise, as you've seen, it just works as a 3-button mouse. Check rpmfind for it.

OOPS!

Sorry, I assumed you were using RH based distro. There should be a slackpac for it. Check your install CD's. It might be there. Otherwise run a google search for it.

Here's what my pointer section of XF86Config looks like (I have an MS Intellimouse, but I think the last two lines should be the same for yours):

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Buttons" "3"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

That got the wheel working in Slackware 8 for me

right now my mouse is set for PS/2, is there a difference between that and IMPS/2, and will it affect either how my mouse works or if the wheel works?

also, i compiled imwheel /and/ added that section to XF86config. should i put imwheel in .xinitrc or the system startup(wherever that is).

off topic: where /is/ the system startup script?

and thanx for the help thus far, i seem to be getting somewhere. hope i can fnish this soon. but i have to go to work today, so i can fool with configs remotely, but i won't be able to test the wheel

The IMPS/2 stands for IntelliMouse PS/2, you said you had a Logitech so I don't know if that will work (I just wanted you to see the last entries which might be the same for you). You never said what you exact type was. Here's where you can get the info directly:

http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/mouse.html

http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/mouse6.html#34
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/mouse7.html#38 )

As you can see this is for version 4.1.0 which is what Slackware 8 has
