pathname directory meaning

Can someone tell me what [usr] stands for in the unix or linux os.I can see
that bin is for binarys ect,but would like to get a better understanding to
help find where some files are stored.Would like to find out how to use the
vi editer in linux,qnx,ect,like trying to get out of the program,ect.If anyone
could help on these for right now it would be appreciated.I am sure there will
be questions in the future as I keep learning this stuff.Thanks mike

Thought it better to quote an extensive resource than the little bit that we could exchange over these channels.
