Angry Fire Red Hat ver 6.0 modem trouble

I have an old 486/66 computer with Win95b, ZoomFaxModem V.34I Model 2834 installed and the system works fine. I have also installed Red Hat ver 6.0 and the linux works good except I can't configure the modem to access the internet. The modem as installed into my computer has the jumpers set for COM4. I can't get the system to connect to the internet. If I use Network Configurator and activate ppp0 the modem appears to dial ok. At a console screen if I ping my Internet Provider there is no connection or returns. Then when I deactivate using Network Configuator it displays inactive but when I pickup the phone the modem is still running. I must do a complete system shutdown to shut down the modem. Listed below are the current Minicom settings that were set by Red Hat ver 6.0. Could someone verify that these settings are correct for a Model 2834. Thank you very much.

Could be a case of file permission. Are you using root when trying to connect to the internet or just an ordinary user account?
If your are just logged in as an ordinary user, change to root account and try to connect.
If you are successfull then some of the files used to dial out may only have read or execute permission for root. DON"T USE root as a permanent account for surfing the net, I've suggested this only as a test.

Check your resolv.conf. Make syre the ip address of the name server your isp provided is in there.

Hope this helps
