I'm trying to install my video drivers, and I need to get to the console. The manuals don't explane this (I have MAndrake 7.0), but I think I found on this forum that pressing ctrl-alt-backspace should do it, but it doesn't. It just restarts X, no matter what user I am or where I do this from. Any ideas?

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does restart x. Crtl-Alt-F1 will bring you to the console.

Joe, CTRL+ALT+F1 (or F2 through F6) will bring up one of your 6 console pages. CTRL+ALT+F7 will take you back to the graphical page (if your in Mandrake) Also, even though they are seperate processes and seperate sessions, I'd log out of the graphical interface before doing any system configs. I had a problem loading my sound card, but this last time I logged out of the graphical interface, then switched to a console screen, logged in as root and ran sndconfig. Ya know what... sndconfig worked perfectly, this time.
