I've had a lot of problems getting Mandrake going both video and sound. Finally seem to have it working right. I still have a space around the edge of the gui, but hey that's minor, if I don't get those darn memory errors like I did with windows. I still have a couple things to work out, like CDs play but system sounds (wav files) don't, but I'm getting there. TO your problem... I got a similar screen after I ran sndconfig and finally got the sound working (are you auto stating X, or manually) I tried not autostarting X once when I logged in as root, then ran startx. It brought up the graphical desktop AND the graphical login. (and all the desktop icons were blackened out... I haven't had the guts to try that again :-) ) Try going to a console screen other than where the graphical page is. Press ALT+CTRL+F1 (or F2-F6... you have 6 other screens besides the graphical screen). Login as root and run xconfigurator and reselect the card and monitor. I ran into problems because (I think) my video card has an ExpertColor DSV3365 chip on it and that is the card I was selecting ( the card is actually a DataExpert DSV3365) now I'm up and running at 800X600 and besides not having some stuff installed yet (modem and NIC) the only problem I seem to have is a jumpy mouse (but I'm working it). I, too, am new to Linux, and although I have 3 years prior admin experience with SCO UNIX, Mandrake still gave me a tough time ( I even thought of getting the new Corel Linux Deluxe), so don't get too discouraged. I guess in the last couple of years with all the new video cards, and such developments, things in the UNIX/Linux world have also changed. Hang in there. From what I hear the more stable environment is worth the effort.... We shall see.
By the way any, one have a mouse that has a PC AT to MC ** switch on the bottom? What is the best setting (of the switch and the Acceleration/threshold in the OS) for this mouse? And, has anyone tried a Warcraft or StarCraft Under WINE (or VMware running Win95... by the way does VMWare come with Mandrake or where can I buy it?) Sorry this is so long, I'm just pumped at finally having the chance to get LINUX working right. I've been harping on MICROSOFT's case for months at work, and then running into LINUX problems like I did I was starting to get a little worried :-). |

Did you do the recommended install. I had the same problem trying to do the server install. Mandrake seems to work best with the recommended install.

Hold on there Copy, keep the beast in its cage.
Yeah byte, more than likely its the reconmened install, but the custom or expert works nicely for me. ------------------ FATAL ERROR!! Non-System brain or brain error!! Replace and strike any key when ready. |

Yeah, more than likely, such as video. If you can/want to, update the video drivers. This might help, or might make it worse. Just some ideas.
