Question

I've noticed this often but there are some people who treat anyone new to the forum like idiots, instead of just answering their question some resort to insults. If I hate Linux because of something then thats my opinion and I want others to respect that, not say things like you dumb **** blah, blah, blah get lost from this planet, you don't deserve to live... and what for, just because I said a few horrid words about Linux.

So what I think is that everybody should be entitled to their own opinion and new comers should be treated with respect even if they do say something stupid like 'what's a computer?' instead of just flamming them.

Considering myself a newbie(relatively speaking),I agree with copyright. The flamers maybe forgot why they joined this forum in the 1st place. And if they joined just for the bloodsport of flaming, then, they joined for the wrong reason.

I don't agree, copyright_1978. It is OK for you to have an opinion. Everyone has an opinion on just about any subject. As I recall though, some of the posts I have seen here lately have not been just asking a question and expressing an opinion. I am very happy with the answers I have gotten here, as well as the attitude towards me as a new Linux user. Nobody has ever put me down for being "ignorant". I used to use another forum but I got disgusted there because most of the posts were of the "rant and rave" type and there was LITTLE valuable information. When building my first computer I went there and spent HOURS looking over posts that just argued the merits of an Intel cpu over the AMD and vice-versa, or how if you used a certain type of video card you were an idiot. To me as a newbie, this place has been a Goldmine of valuable info. I have been called out here for giving "bad" advice. I have not taken it personal, but have been happy that someone was there to point out that my suggestion may have caused damage to someone's machine. Cheers to the "flamers" that are there to really help.

Well, Copy, this could be the perfect world where we allow ourselves to be bashed by someone else's comments, but this is a imperfect world where we fight back. How would you like me to say that 1978 was a sucky year and it should be torn from the calender? See what I mean? I know, I know. Who am I to be the one to talk. I hit down Linux, but I was under a looney rage to the point I started making up things just to prove myself right (well, I proved myself wrong in the end). I started using Linux and I have started to gain a extremely small understanding of how it works. Opinions should be heard, but when you start insutling someones love life (remeber that? you asked if Vital made love to Linux?), you have gone not too far, but to the point where you lost most (if not all) respect from everyone. I'll shut up now for fear from the powers above.

Lol, true very true but I didn't start the offence.

revelation, flammers are there to help? interesting.... does it help when someone calls you an idot because you asked them why the wav device on Linux isn't working this time round? You might think being flammed is a learning experience but I don't, it's as stupid as saying inocent supporters of football that went to Belgium to watch the match, who got caught in the middle then beaten up for no reason, is a good thing - it's a lesson... never go to a match outside your own country again.

Anyway enough of all this, Joe I agree with you, Linux does have it's qualities, things which I have discovered Windows could not do, I'm still playing around with Mandrake 7.

And sorry for whatever stuff I did Joe, blah, I hate saying sorry but I mean it.

I am thinking that while what you say is true on many forums...this one PCMech is one of the best out there and not much flamming goes on here. Thatr is why I am here and not out there

You guys sure you're talking about the right forums? PC Mech? I don't spend any time in Alternative OS's cuz I'm striclly a windows guy but I find it hard to believe that someone here has called you names or been disrespectful. The Moderators don't tolerate that kind of thing at all. And those of us that see it and want to keep this the civil, helpful computer help site that it is, click on the Report this post to moderator link. After you've been here awhile you'll probably begin to see the consistency of certain posters answers. Some are somewhat long and conversational (like me) and others are short and to the point. Some don't even comment, they just direct you to a link with the answer to your question. None are meant as flames or disrespect. My suggestion is to click the 'Report' link when you feel someone is out of line. That'll help keep this place the best computer help forum on the web. Don't even bother to respond to the flamer, that just gives them what they want. My motto is, "Never engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent". And btw, belatedly, welcome to PC Mech.

Man, that's twice in the last three days that I've responded to someone digging out an old thread. Why can't we just leave the dead buried?
