Put the floppy or cd in the drive(s) and r-click the floppy or cd icon on the desktop. When the menu appears click "mount" you can then read the cd from konqueror or nautilus or the file manager you prefer. With the floppy you may have to login as root to read the floppy.
(This is how the permissions in SuSE are setup for floppy drives-dont know off-hand if MDK8.1 treats it the same)
Mount the floppy the same way as the cd.Make sure you put the disk in the drive before you mount it.Remove the disk after you unmount it.R-clicking the icon will allow unmounting too.
With audio cds,you shouldnt have to mount the drive.HTH

There is a problem with supermount in Mandy 8.1. It is disabled by default. If I remember right you will need to edit your fstab to get it to work. Check out MandrakeExpert forum for a detailed work-around.

I don't know guys, maybe I am doing something wrong, but I installed Mandrake 8.1 last week when I finished my new build, and everything seems to be working. CD-Rom, floppy, Modem, NIC, everything.

Dustin, please tell us exactly what you are doing to mount the CD-Rom or the floppy. How are you logged in?

OOPS is right, I've also intalled Mandrake 8.1 and there was a problem with fstab file which causes supermount to fail.

I had to remove some flags for the cdrom and floppy entries, I can't remember excatly since I'm at the office right now.

I also had to change the fs type from auto to specific fs type.
For the my cdrom I had to put "iso9660" as the file system instead of auto and for my floppy I used vfat.

The problem with this is that if I insert a removable media with a different file system then the mount will surely fail.

Computer Hobbyist maybe you can post the content of your fstab file so that we can compare it against our fstab files and maybe fix our problem.

I'll try to remember when I get home tonight, but this looks like its going to be one of the busiest days of the last year.

You say that you can't mount a floppy or disk with a different file system?

Here is the /etc/fstab file that came with my copy of Mandrake 8.1. I haven't done anything with it. My kernal version is 2.4.8-26 mdk #1.

I have not had occasion to use removable media with a different file system. I'll give that a shot and see if it fails.

I noted that the file didn't attach the last time.

I just put a Windows based CD in the CD-Rom and no problem.

Computer Hobbyist,
Your ftab options looks the same as my fstab options
user,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,exec,codepage=850,ro,noauto 0 0, when supermount is not enabled.

Do you enable supermount?

When you insert a disk in your CD Drive does it get automatically mounted or do have to do a mount manually?

I mount it manually, but that's what I prefer. Frankly, I don't like autolaunching in windows either. It's never been a problem to me.

I guess I might have the same problem you have encountered.

Need to check it out.
