Thanks for that, I had it figured about the learning curve, you think that's bad, I also have to learn perl, sys admin, webware, and tech support, it okay though I've only got 6 months to do it all.Crikey

I think it's time to consider owning stock in Foldger's Coffee.

Books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hehehe .. me is an egghead

I got 3 suggestions if you do decide to take my advice on books-

  1. Important that you first figure out the flavour of Unix you are using, although the principles are common, you will get a lot of help with concentrating on what you need
  2. Important that you find out what platform the UNIX is running, UNIX can be very specific and there are some excellent resources on UNIX geared towards the platform [I dont mean whether its a pentium or a P-III] .. i mean whether its a Solaris or an Alpha or an x86 .. etc etc etc.. UNIX is a HUGE family of related OS
  3. Important that you are honest about how level of proficiency, not just for UNIX but for computers in general! It wouldnt help buying a book that picks up a thread based on the assumption that you know other concepts.

Question

Thanks ex,
I am learning a bit, I know my html, c++ and vb5, very familiar with win95. I have just built two pc's this week and the learning curve keeps curving. I guess level of proficency is not bad but totally non-existent for unix
Cheers

If you've got C/C++ knowledge, then configuration shouldn't be too hard to grasp.

You might consider a Linux distribution to get started, something that installes a graphical desktop by default. It'll be a more familiar working environment, along with all the manuals in HTML format with Netscape handy for ya, plus your Unix shell environment will only be a terminal window away when ya wanna try something.
