Question

Recently tried installing Mandrake 7.1 for a duel-boot system with win98. Made linux and swap partition with PQMagic. So far so good.
During install, DrakX would show a message that there was an error installing certain packages, most notable being various XFree86 components. It gave the option to continue or stop-I chose continue.
This was a custom install, as recomended in user manual for duel-boot systems. When it came time to test the Xconfiguration,It detected my Voodoo Banshee agp(generic)and my monitor was listed in the hardware list of compatible monitors. But when it tested, all I got was a black screen.
Is this typical of a bad install disk or have I got a some other prob?
I have the Red Hat dist. from NoSpin.Should I try that or take Mandrake back to store for an exchange and try again?TIA for any help.

What exactly was the error. It is highly likely that your media is corrupt, although it is not uncommon for the Mandrake installer to go for a toss at random moments. Have you tried doing a console install [loads of probs on GUI are nonexistent on the console]. If you paid lotsa $ for it, its a good idea to get a swap, and if you are getting it swapped going for Rhat isnt a bad idea.

On the other hand, you have other options... like installing the correct Xfree86 packages and doing an X server setup from your console [that is if you can get to your console]. In any event, I'd suggest a fresh install; the errors that you saw might be just part of the problems that occured, dont assume that the rest of the install was fine.

Cool

I have had a similar problem on a system. The same Mandrake 7.1 works great on this system. On this system the installer was able to configure my monitor and ATI graphics card without a problem, but on the other it wants me to tell it what kind of card and monitor I have. When I choose the correct monitor and graphics card (both the generic S3 and the "Diamond" card) it too comes up with an error or a blank screen. I hit the control, alt, backspace to get back to choose another setting. After much trial and error I can get it to work, but like I said it was with some trial and error. I don't think it is your disk. The other thing is that you do not have to set it up as a "custom" install. It is just a little safer to take it one step at a time in the "custom" install if you are using the partitioning tools included in Mandrake because you also have another operating system to be careful not to delete. Now that you have installed Linux and have set some partitions, you may be OK with the regular installation.

Well, it worked this time! Made sure to boot from the installation disk and chose automated installation.Finished up 25 minutes later without a bump or bruise.Man it is incredible all the stuff you get with this system.
Oh, I'm sure things will come up as I get deeper into this OS and I'll be looking for advice when they do, but right now everything works and I'm
