Interested in Linux but need advice.

I am interested in trying out Linux but have never used it before. I'm not ready to give up Windows, but if I don't try something else, how will I know.

What would you guys recommend I do. I realized that I will have to partition my HD to install it. How many versions are out there? Which one should I get? Where can I download it? I understand that certain versions are free -- is that true? If so, where do I go? I found WinLinux online but I am running Windows 2000 pro and Windows XP.

I think you get the idea. Basically, I'm lost. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
freezinbutt

You can install Linux on your current HDD, and it will do an excellent job of partitioning and using only your free space. I would recommend using Linux Mandrake for starting. It is one of the best for beginners. Also, I would get a Linux book, so you can use the command line and interface with more skill. Linux is open source, so I think I can say this... I could burn you a copy of Linux mandrake 8 or Red Hat and send it if you want to avoid the download time. (650ish MB) Good Luck! Welcome to the good side!

I have a cable modem so I don't mind the download time. Where can I download it?

Thanks,

Thumbs up

I also think mandrake would be a fine distro to start with. It is easy to install and update. I think it is just what you are looking for.

You can download it from http://www.linux-mandrake.com/ or http://linuxiso.org/.

Furthermore, if you run into challenges and you will then swing by http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ or http://www.linuxquestions.org/ and post you heart out. Both sites are great. The have a lot of useful information and the people who hang out there really know that they are talking about.

Go for it. It is great fun and not to forget absolutely free.
