GNOME or KDE?

Which is the 'better' GUI? Reasons please...

They could be anything from ease of use / technical support / free prawns with every installation etc etc

Thanks a lot,

Hi again,

There are a ton of different windowmanagers and desktop GUI's. There IS a difference. A wm can run by itself. A desktop GUI ( Gnome& KDE ) needs a wm to work.

Personally, I prefer XFce ( small and lite, plus very fast ), and I can't stand Gnome. To "old-fashioned" feeling for me ( and don't get me started on Nautulis ). I like KDE better, but it takes a lot of resources to really make it smooth running. There are also icewm, WM, Enlightentment, Blackbox, FVWM, FVWM2, plus a few more I've forgotten. The best part is YOU can try them all and then pick the one(s) YOU like.

OOPS!

A few more questions...

Can KDE and GNOME etc etc be used with ANY distro of Linux? Can I for instance install RedHat without a GUI then download another and install into it?

Thanks for the help,

Oh, just out of curiousity does anybody know which of the two in question takes up the most HDD space?

I thnik Gnome and KDE are about a toss-up for space. And yes, you can load RH without a GUI and then download your choice. Chances are if you check out your install CD's, there should be more wm's included with it. Any WM or GUI can be used with any distro of Linux.

A word of caution, some apps need parts of certain wm's to run. Like KOffice needs the KDE core files, and say GToaster needs the Gnome core to work. This can be gotten around easily by using differnt apps though.

OOPS! is pretty much right on. The thing is if you want to run KOffice the KDE base and library files must be present, but KDE itself does not have to be active. I run XFCE (light weight desktop) on my small laptop and KOffice. XFCE actually requires some of the Gnome libraries such as GTK, so in fact I have a mix of KDE, Gnome, and XFCE all happily running along. Ain't Linux great !!

I have used both and prefer KDE, but that might be the result of using a newer version of KDE than Gnome. If you have a normal size hard drive, I think you should load both and play to decide what you like best.

My current Linux problem involves KDE, sort of. I am using Mandrake 8.1. Like nearly all of the distributions, it loads various default components. One of those components is Netscape 4.78. I have downloaded Netscape 6.2, and it runs fine, but the other night I downloaded a program from Codeweavers to handle pluggins such as quicktime etc. It loads the pluggins into my old version of Netscape but not the new. How come and what can I do about it?

What you need to do is make a symlink to the 6.2 plugin dir.
