Lilo boot problem: LI
hey everyone,
i decided to try out linux on my machine and got around to putting the RedHat(7.2) into the box. I put it onto the separate hd, which is on the Promise Ultra100TX2 ide controller. Now i set up the bios to boot from scsi and every time i do that - i get 'LI' after the POST and then it just sits there. A couple more details about my setup: i used smthg called 'ext3' for the filesystem - is that reiserFS? dev/hde1 -53mb - /boot <- this is where Lilo is installed dev/hde2 -7.4gb- /root dev/hde3 -604mb- swap dev/hda - Windows setup i still can boot to RH from the floppy though.. thanx, |

I suspect that the Promise controler is causing the trouble. I'm idling alone with ata33 so I've not personally dealt with it. But I recommend that you check out this how-to, http://www.linuxjunior.org/cgi-bin/p...=Display&id=20 on getting your promise card to work.
Nope ext3 isn't the same as reisers. They are both journelling FS, but ext3 is based on ext2. I personally recommend ext3 over reisers. It's faster overall, and less prone to trouble. I would also recommend changing your partion scheme. Having everything in /root is kind of bad juju for security and housekeeping. I break mine down like this- / (boot about150megs) /swap (equal to ram) /var (for logs and such, ~200megs, depends on how much logging you do) /usr (for your programs ~1.5-4.0gigs) /home (500megs to ~1.0gig). The exact sizes are all optional, depending on drive space, amount of programs, and number of users (and what each user does). Hope this is of some help OOPS!

thanx, OOPS!
i'll check that link out right now. As fo the partitioning the drive u're right - mine is quite quiet lame. I will probably resize the partitions once i get the Lilo to work. How would i resize the partitions in RH? sorry, i'm a total noob. thanx, |

Repartioning on a running system can be done, but it's not for us amatures. Best bet would be to do a reinstall of RH. And that might be best for getting your promise card going correctly also.
Have fun with RH, play around. Above all READ! there is lots of good info on the net. OOPS! |
