WordPerfect Filters

About the only thing keeping my office desktop from going Linux is the fact that I am a lawyer and like most law firms my office uses WordPerfect instead of Word. (Heck, my partner uses WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. He calls it the best word processor ever written.)

When Corel backed out of the Linux market (after a storm of criticism from short sighted Linux users and a lack of market success,) it took WordPerfect with it. Word processors with WordPerfect filters are few and far between. StarOffice6.0 seems to be the only one. My beta version of StarOffice is set to expire on March 31, and the new commercial version of StarOffice 6, doesn't come out until after April. Anybody know where I can find WordPerfect filters? My copy of OpenOffice doesn't have WordPerfect filters.

Unfortunately, Word Perfect filters are on the "to do" list (http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/todos.html), and not yet in OpenOffice.org.

I think wpd files are translated in SO 6, but I haven't seen a filter in SO 52. I guess I'll have to go back and look again at both. In the meantime, I'll just convert my files to MS Word, download them from my office machine and then load them into OpenOffice. When I'm done, I'll reverse the process. Inconvenient, yes. Still better than installing Windows on my home machine.

I not that ABIWord has some capacity to translate wpd files.

I really wish Corel had decided to take WordPerfect8 open source. It would have been great for the linux and legal communities. I think it would have also been great for Corel.

Dear StarOffice 6.0 Beta Software User,

As beta products are designed to run for a limited period of time, the StarOffice 6.0 beta product is set to expire on Sunday, March 31, 2002. Sun is providing a free patch to extend the life of the beta software until June 3. Please visit http://www.sun.com/staroffice/so6beta_patch.html to download the StarOffice 6.0 Beta software patch.

The beta patch will help you avoid interruptions to any of the StarOffice 6.0 Beta applications you may be using. The patch will keep your software running and ease the transition from the beta product to the final retail product, planned for release in May. Again, the patch download can be found at http://www.sun.com/staroffice/so6beta_patch.html.

Thank you.

The StarOffice Team

Hopes this helps .
