I know very little about Linux, but I'm starting to get interested in it, and I'm planning on learning about it soon. I was just wondering whether I would be able to run software such as Norton Anti Virus or any PC games on linux.
thank you Dswissmiss |

Hi,
Some games can be run under Linux with the use of emulator software such as WINE or dosmu. Some of the games that can be made to work are Halflife, Counterstrike, and some others. Gaming in Linux is nowhere near what it is under Windows. And Manufactures don't seem to be too willing to port many as yet. There are some open source games that are availabe, but aren't up to the levels of the Windows platform yet. It probably will be one day, but not just today. Anti-virus software is almost unheard of in the *nix world. There is some, but it is used to mostly screen e-mails and such to protect Windows machines. The reason for this is that most Linux users tend to be more savy about sercurity, and most viri need to have root permission to execute (a particular weakness of Windows, everyone has administrative power). And I suspect, writing a virus for a *nix OS requires a little more talent than most "scriptkiddies" have. That said, there are a small handful viri for *nix. Most are pretty harmless, a few exist only in captivity, and one was released that actually "fixed" a security hole! It did no damage, just fixed your system for you. Lniux is a great OS. I personally recommend it and use it. Give it a try. I think you'll agree! OOPS!

Hi,
If you are interested in learning more about Linux you should probably start by reading the links that Statica has posted in the first thread to this forum. I would also suggest you go to your library and read a book or two. (I bought mine--I reference it a lot.) I wouldn't listen too much to people who tell you that only real geeks use Linux and that its just too hard for mere mortals. While learning it in depth it can be just as hard as you have heard, over the last year or so several companies have released distributions making it much easier to install and really fun to use. Mandrake 8.1 is a real easy distribution for the first time user. There is a Mandrake Gaming Edition Featuring the Sims. You might want to check it out. The just released Mandrake 8.2 is said to be easier. RedHat 7.2 is also very good. Some of the others around here will tell you that their favorite vendor sells the best flavor. All the distibutions have strong points. As to viri, there are companies who manufacture and sell Linux antivirus software. Go to www.linux.org and look at applications for links. Because few viri are written for Linux, the checkers mostly find e-mail containing Windows infections. Have fun. CH Last edited by Computer Hobbyist; 03-22-2002 at 03:56 PM. |

Hi,
I don't know a whole lot about it. According to their press releases, Lindows will be basicly a distro that is trying to more tightly intergrate Wine into itself. Mostly so it can run MS Office apps better. So far, they have only released VERY beta stuff. Far from a finished version. I wouldn't recommend it at this time. Plus, they are getting sued by M$ for trademark infringment. Though that might backfire on M$ ( Judge refused M$ request for injuction, stating "Windows" might be too "generic" to tm ). OOPS! |

I thought Apple invented the term Window as it is used for the computer world.

Strangely enough, a major retailer is packing Lindows with some PCs. When I read Lindows take on this, they more or less said they felt o.k. on this because it was tested with these hardware configurations.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25734.html Wal-Mart shipping PCs with Lindows preinstalled This looks to be a web-only offering, but the prices were interesting for entry-level and better.... Last edited by MaXimum SMOKE; 07-02-2002 at 10:22 PM. |

A long time ago I concluded that any operating system can be infected by a properly designed virus. For that reason I use all the same security procedures on my Linux box as on my Windows machine, including running an AV program. So far it has found several common windows viri in email, just like my windows AV programs.
Linux is an operating system. It is not an anti-virus program. I have to admit that Oops is right. It does take somebody a cut or two above the average scriptkiddie to write a Linux virus. CH |
