Unix 5.5??
HI Guys,
I need help in installing UNIX 5.5. Well I have not tried at all but I need directions and help. I am currently running win2k and have 4 partitions. I wld like to use one currently empty partition to install the UNIX. I know that installing UNIX is much more complex as there might be hardware issues too right? Mine is a bootable CD-ROM. My system Spec P3 1.0B GHz Winsonic MOBO with VIA PM133/686B Onboard video- S3 savage 4 Onboard Sound AC97 256MB Kingston PC133 Please let me know the stuffs that I have to becareful with which might mess up or what soever. thx |

huh that is weird.
actually my sister wants it. She got this from her course centre., a copy, ofcourse. Its says " SCO OpenServer Release 5" Is this unix.? I have no idea cause I have not used Unix at all. If possible could you tell me what Unix should I get? Because my sister wants to learn to use it including simple commands. Thx |

O.K., SCO is a version of Unix. From what I have heard of it, it's not all that easy to work with, but then again I've never dealt with it personally.
There may be someone around this forum who knows SCO, and if your sister absolutely needs it for her course work, then she should try to use it. Now, if SCO is not an absolute requirement for her, then one of the Linux distributions will work as well or better. Linux can be downloaded for free, or obtained off the shelf at your favorite elecronics/software/computer store, or stuffed in the back of a good Linux book. I would personally recommend one of the recent Mandrake distros such as 8.0, 8.1, or the very latest 8.2, simply for the ease of installation. Others will undoubtedly disagree  !!

Hi aceMan, just a seggestion. If your sister wants to learn simple commands, she may want to try Linux. Not sure if you have the docs to install your UNIX version, but I'm sure there is plenty docs for Linux.

Thx people,
Well I just hope that the commands and such for Linix are the same as Unix. Like file structre nd all others. Because after doing this Unix my sister intends to put that she has been using Unix in her resume. Thx again |
