Question Which one should I pick?

I've finally decided to open my HD to Linux, but I don't know ANYTHING about this OS.

Could you please tell me which version is best. So far, the only one I can get easily is SuSe Linux (at 30 bucks with one of my dealers), but I don't know if it's the best bet.

I also want to offer Linux as an alternative OS in the PCs I'm selling. So, which one is better?

TIA

I just put Linux on my machine for the first time. I new nothing about it so I did what you are doing. I asked for adivce and was told to try Mandrake. I started with 8.1 but just upgraded to 8.2 the other day. I highly recommend Mandrake 8.2. It is very easy to install and learn. I also recommend using KDE as a GUI. It is very much like Windows and should be easy for you to pick up on. You should also think about some books on Linux and keep posting on this forum. I got some great answers to my questions here. You can also try www.linuxquestions.org for another great forum to get help.

Good luck,

Mandrake, it's the easiest to install and get started with IMO.

You can download Mandrake if you have a high speed modem at www.linuxiso.org. I have a cable modem at 512K and it took me about 7 to 9 hours to get all three disks. If you do not want a complete install, you can just download disk 1 and install it to try it out. This is what I did when I installed 8.1 but when I installed 8.2 I opted to install the whole package. I like the extra bells and whistles that are on disk two and three.

Any of those is a good distro to start with. They are all easy to install and good about detecting hardware.

RH tends to be aimed more at servers, so not so many bells and whistles are included. But they can be easily downloaded and added to it. Mandy wants to be everybodies first distro for the desktop. Lots of bells and whistles. Cutting edge apps that can be a bit buggy to use. SuSe kind of fits between RH and Mandy. It is very popular in Europe.

So, take your pick, it would be hard to make a wrong choice. Plus, chances are that you will end up trying serveral different distros anyway (simply because you can, hey they are cheap!).

Madrake it easy to install, and learn on. However, I voted for redhat. You will probably want to go to RedHat eventually, so why not take the time to learn on it? It is also fairly easy to install.

The answer to your question depends entirely on how you are going to use the computer. If you are looking for a good desktop go with Mandrake. Easiest to set up and easiest for a newbie to learn.

If you are going to set up a server, use RedHat. The company is really focused on that market.

SuSe is also very good.

You can't go wrong with any of them.
