The new RedHat distros, especially 7.2, are good newbie distros because of the install procedures. I never had much luck with the older versions (5.2, 6.0) .

What kind of problems did you have with Mandrake? And which Mandrake version?

I also installed redhat 7.2 as my first linux install, very easy to install, I recommend you to go for it.

RedHat linux is generally more stable. Mandrake on the other hand while bleeding edge is far from stable in most initial offerings of releases. There have been quite a few gaffs in their installation scripts in the past. I find that Mandrake is also on the edge with their releases to various packages. RedHat on the other hand doesnt make trivial releases, but if they have an upgrade out, it will be one that will have been tested thoroughly.

Depends on what you choose to do during setup. If you setup your GUI & tell RedHat that you want to start the GUI at start time, then you will get a grafical login... altho I would never recommend the orocess! Boot to console, at least for the first few times after a fresh install. Verify that all is well, then you can switch to having your GUI start @ boot
