Too advanced for Linux

Well, I finally decided to bit the bullet and get a copy of SuSE Linux 7.1. It was a retail Linux because there's no way I can download 700 MB on a dial-up connection.

So I installed onto my old PII @ 400 MHz, Intel BX, TNT2 machine and seems that all was well.

But when I tried to install it onto my main PC (where I really want Linux installed) the installation was a total pain. It just didn't work. Seems that my video card (Chaintech GF3 Ti 200) is the culprit. It seems that it is just too advanced to Linux since I checked for specific drivers for my vc but it seems that there are none available at the time. I downloaded the general drivers from nVidia's web site but I don't know how to install them.

During the installation SuSE copies LILO to a floppy and then restarts the system. After restarting, a message appears telling you to configure your video mode or something like that. No matter if you configure it or not, when the YaST2 installer appears again it does in 16 colors. OK. The installation continues...

When it is complete the installer presents you the "Setup your display". The only mode available is 640x480 @ 256 colors. You cannot change anything! It then promts you to test it, but it does not do it! You click on "Test" but it tests nothing! And if you click on "Next" it tells you that you need to test the video mode first. The only way out of that screen is by refusing to setup the display and leaving it for later.

The installer then continues and finally tells you that you are ready to log onto Linux. And then hangs!

The only way out of it is via the reset button. But it corrupts one of the Linux's partitions. And you are forced to fix it MANUALLY! Great! And how am I s'posed to do that??

I tried reinstalling thrice and everything was the same. So, is there no way to get rid of M$ and have finally the nice Penguin installed onto my PC??

For Linux, it is best to use an Nvidia Chipset Video card, as they are the most supported cards. FYI
