Linux for the masses

I wish I had time to write a few paragraphs about this article, and post it as news, but I am in a bit of a hurry today. If someone else wants to take the time to do it, feel free.

This approach has been tried before, by "Linux for the masses" they usually mean "Make Linux look like Windows". Still, I think I'll download this and give it a try, it's based on Corel Linux which wasn't that bad. Thanks for the link Deadeye.

We were just chatting about this on the "unofficial" IRC channel. Anyone who gives it a go please keep us posted. I feel a Linux build coming on.....

I have just downloaded it and I'm going to give it a go. I've read some pretty mixed reviews about it. Mostly bad stuff. Almost all of the bad reviews come from die hard Linux guys who don't like anything that looks or feels like Window$. I'll post back with my $0.02 worth.

OK guys.....here goes,

I just installed Redmond Linux (Lycrosis) and I gotta tell you, I'm not all that impressed. It is very easy to install......even gives you a little diversion with a solitare game while the files are loading. It not only found all my hardware ok, but it also found the printers on my network that are on a Linksys print server (heck, even Window$ 2000 and XP didn't do that).

It looks and feels very much like Windows XP but I felt it was lacking for tools and apps. It has all the basics, but you'll be doing quite a bit of downloading if you want more bells and whistles. Seems to be quite a memory hog as well, compared to Mandrake and Redhat. The only desktop that was offered was KDE. That is no big deal for me because I like KDE but for others....well.....back to downloading.

For those people wanting to try Linux and see what it is like, without having to do a lot of configuring, I'd say it is worth a try. If you want to see what Linux is REALLY all about though....you know....really dive in and get you feet wet......I think I'd stick with one of the mainstream distros myself. I'm a big fan of Mandrake so I guess I'm a bit biased here. I've also tired Redhat and SUSE. I am, however, not a Linux guru or anything like that so please take this for what it is worth.

Just my $0.02 worth.
