Still not connected
I'm running Mandrake 8.1. I have set up my internet connection with the wizard and also KPPP. When I try to connect, I cannot hear a dial tone or the modem dialing, but it says, "modem ready", "initializing", then "dialing". Then it keeps initializing and dialing over and over without connecting.
I know the internet connection works because I tested it with my lap top. Any ideas? |

Ok,
The reason you don't hear the modem is because the sound for it is turned down by default. When you start kppp, click on the setup, then go to the modem tab and turn up the sound. You should hear your modem then. As for the connection, well check your dns settings, password, phone number, etc. (Don't laugh, I spent 2 days once cursing and cussing till I figured out I'd entered the wrong phone number!!). You can edit your account through the same setup as the modem volume. Otherwise, does your isp use some funky software to access? Turning on the logging window will help you debug the problem also. Otherwise Mandy has detected and setup the modem properly if it is dialing out. OOPS! Last edited by OOPS!; 04-14-2002 at 07:09 PM. |

The volume for the modem is set at halfway.
For the dns settings, I entered them in the internet config, but the Kppp was set by default to automatic which doesn't allow them to be typed in. Only under manual do the fields become "alive" where I can enter the numbers. If I don't hear another ideas, I'll try the manual settings. I don't understand why I have to set up Kppp and the internet config both. |

In the directory, it lists my modem as being connected to ttys4. In the Kppp
set up, the default setting is /dev/modem and the drop down menu has ttys0 - 3, and ttys10 - 13, but no ttys4. Could this be my problem? |

No, that shouldn't matter. My setup I have my modem on ttys2 (com3), and under kppp it shows as /dev/modem. Is this a "hard modem"? If it is dialing out Mandy has it setup correctly.
Does it sound like the isp is picking up the call on the other end or is it just busy or ringing? What does your log window show? That will show you any errors that occur. Maybe you need to call your isp to find out what authentication they use, (pap, chap, etc.). Though I would almost expect a blank stare when you mention Linux. Maybe increase your time out settings. It is probably just some niggling setting. We just have to fool with it some. OOPS! |

As embarrassing as it is, I'm going to admit my mistake. I had the phone line
plugged into the wrong jack on the modem. Now I hear the dial tone and can get on line. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. |
