Try this from the Linux Documentation Project. One of the most important things is to understand your hardware and any unusual configurations that you might have. Linux will understand all but the very newest bleeding edge hardware revisions, and even then will get it pretty well. There are some hardware manufacturers that don't have open source drivers, but for some (i.e., Nvidia) that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Now, each distribution has its own installation routines and processes. Some, like Redhat and Mandrake will have choices between an expert install and a recommended/simple install. My choice and recommendation is to always do the expert install -- it takes longer, but you will have a better appreciation of Linux and how it is built.

Do some homework, pick a distro, and jump in !!

In addition to the fine link that jglen490 posted you might want to look at the links found in this tread. . The first link in the first post is to a comprehensive linux hardware/driver database.

hey, jglen490

What did you mean by your comment about nvidia drivers? I have been to their website to look for drivers for the video card I was thinking about buying.

They did have the driver and lots of info about installation and issues with
the ALI chipset on my board.

I think I know what he was talking about. A lot of companies build video cards under license using NVidia chipsets. They all provide a CD with Windows video drivers they have cooked up. Many of the manufacturers don't provide Linux drivers. Well, NVidia does write drivers for its chipsets--both Linux and Windows. To keep their respective licenses manufacturers are required to prove that the NVidia drivers work on their cards. The NVidia drivers will work on all of the NVidia chipset cards I have seen regardless of manufacturer. Many people, myself included, think the NVidia drivers are often better than those manufactured by the various manufacturers. So if you have a NVidia chipset card all you have to do is install the NVidia Linux driver and that card will run regardless of whether the manufacturer writes its own Linux driver.
