You are now in the prescense of a Linux dummie
Well hello out there on PC Mech, here's the skinny:
I've got some older copies of Red Hat Linux that I'm wanting to run the gcc compiler on-- only prob RH's got some bugs in them. And I, being a newbie and not sure how to install the bug fixes. I downloaded the gcc fix (.rpm) and another srpm's file-- figuring that I'd probably need some other file from the list and not wanting to bother to download whatever else I needed later. Well, turns out I did need another file. So I"m just wanting to install this one srpm's file and compile it on this system. So could someone give me a quick rundown on how to compile the source one of these source code rpm's or whatever they're called. Just the syntax and whatever else I need to know would be great thanx nate |

If you're a C++ programmer, you're ahead of me
At any rate, the best shot I can give you is what linux-mag.com has to offer in there online version. They presented articles for newbies on packages, sources, compiling. You will have to navigate the site for a few month's online issues to get all you want. You may wish to start here http://www.linux-mag.com/2000-08/newbies_01.html You wind up using the "back issues" link at the bottom of the page, to navigate to the other issues. Under the departments link, in each issue it's 'newbies'. Good luck. I hope you find what you need. I do know under the recent linux versions, if you installed the programming development packages of your distro, KDE seems to have a nice ide environment it's called KDevelop. |

just thought I'd pull this post back to the top. I think I may be on the right track here, I'll look into it, but if anyone has some magic bullet (e.g. the syntax @ the prompt for doing this sucker coming off the top of their head) it would save me some time. Thanx

Hi snow,
Don't know if this helps but here is an article that explains how to compile and install SRPM's. http://www.linuxnovice.org/main_how....W=VIEW&t_id=52 You might also check out www.linuxquestions.org. Do a search in their forum and I bet you'll find what you are looking for. Good Luck, freezinbutt |

that ought to cover it, I ended up finding the dependent rpm's for this one, but that'll really help me in the future
hopefully I can gain enough knowledge to compile all the necessary files for a linux system and have a clean, quick, lightweight version of linux running and I won't have to rely so much on redhat, etc thanx |
