Modem for Linux
Hi
I have installed Mandrake 8.2 on my machine. I cannot get it to recognise my modem. I have done some reading and it mentions that there is no support for winmodems. I am not sure if I have one. I have a smartlink internal modem. Is this a winmodem. If this is the case could someone recommend an external modem I should look at getting. |

I looked up smartlink on the internet and they make both kinds. You will have to get the numbers off of the modem so we can see if it is. Smartlink boasts on their website that they make a Linux compatible modem but of course those have on-board controllers. Chances are if Mandy did not detect it, it is a Winmodem.
As far as external modems go, any of them will work with Linux because they do all the work outside of the computer. Stay away from USB ones though. Hope that helps. Other than that, what do you think of Linux? freezinbutt |

Hi haggisinlondon,
The general rule is, no winmodems work with Linux except those with Lucent chipsets (with a little tweaking), and all external modems work fine. |

Thanks for the info guys.
I have managed to get a US robotics modem from a friend who no longer needs it. That should solve my problem. I am enjoying Linux so far but having internet access through it would help a lot. Thanks again for the info. |
