Install is strange (RH6.2)
I got RH6.2 from a friend a long time ago but had a small hard drive
Now I've got 20 gigs (which is still small I know) I want to install it properly Before (SAME PC) and it had the SAME HDD before as well when I've installed it in the past there has been a grey nice graphical background install program Now, when I boot from the CD I get a message at the bottom of the screen telling me X Cannot Start It then goes into a text install (like a DOS install of old programs) with red and blue poor graphics What's going on? It's the same video card as before...

I'll take a try. My best guess was that something else changed in the configuration, and for some reason, RH cannot get a quick 'handle' of what your video card is. Like maybe you added another pci card or something, that confused the installer. This doesn't mean you can't install XFree86, and a GUI. It just means you're stuck with the text based installer, until you run the configuration, and 'tell' the install, what hardware it's talking to. This, if I'm not mistaken, was the last version, before the latest version of XFree86 came out. Six point two, ran ok, on some of the older hardware, as the gui, was less demanding as the current is. If your machine is fast enough, however, I would opt. for a newer distribution, for the ease of use, and better hardware support. If you're running an older box, though, the slower performance will be an issue. If you only have a dial up, the later gpl linux versions can be purchased on disk at places like www.lsl.com or http://www.linuxcentral.com or similar places. Good luck on your install.

I don't know what it was but I got the newest versions of Mandrake and RedHat, they both recognise it no problems

Just an idea....could be your monitor. Some of those older versions of Linux do not get along with new monitors. This might explain some of the problems with X not starting.

It was the same monitor as before, I really don't know what was up
Anyway, thanks for the help, it's working as usual now with the new version |
