I have XP installed on C drive and would like to install a copy of Linux Mandrake 7.1 to my D drive. When I try to install it I get a message that Linux can not be installed with this version of windows. Try another method. Since XP has no DOS, how can I install Linux?
C:\=NTFS D:\=Fat32

I'm not 100% sure on this one, but I think the problem is the NTFS partition that is screwing you up here. I'm not sure if the older versions of Mandrake worked well with NTFS. You might want to consider Mandrake 8.2 as it is the current version. I think you would be much happier with 8.2 anyway.

Login failed
I decided to put it on my laptop as a stand alone OS. I installed it easily, but when I get to the login screen, I get "Login Failed" no matter what I type in. I have not been able to open the program yet.

During the install you should have been asked to set up a root password. When prompted, log in as root. For username, type "root" and then enter the password you entered during the install. Once in, set up a user account. When you are logged in as root, you have full access with a "license to kill."
