Networking Red Hat 7.3 and Windows XP
Hi,
I was wondering how I would set up ICS on Red Hat Linux 7.3 and Windows XP Home Edition. What would I need to do this, I have an ADSL connection which I would like to share between the two computers. Liquid-X |

Kind of depends upon which box is serving which.... If you have 'ICS' configured on the win machine and both boxes are also privately networked together with ethernet cards, then just set the Linux box up in it's network configuration on the same 'private' network as the Win box. I don't do XP, but if it's like Me '98Se, they used to like 192.168.0.1 as the server. If this is so, then set the static IP for the ethernet of the Linux box to say 192.168.0.2 Then set the 'gateway address' of the Linux box for the win box. In this case 192.168.0.1 Then set the DNS settings on the Lin box, for your ISP's DNS servers.
If the Linux box is the server, then you have to decide if you want the Lin box to use IP Masquerading (very transparent) or let the Lin box run a Proxy process like Squid. Here is a link on setting up Ip masquerading http://www.redhat.com/support/resour...llservice.html The downloadable script here is heavily commented, and can probably be tweaked for your own use. RH has a pretty good search engine on their site, and there are probably many pages that will hit your level of expertise. The above assumes a basic firewall and masquerading, so it is pretty long.... They didn't mention the RH version, but it will give you an idea what's going on for the basics... |
