linux system requirments
hi
i have an old 486 dx lying aroud doing nothing. i would like to run linux on this machine but i am insecure as to what distribution i should use, and probably more importantly, as this is only a 486 what version. could annyone offer me some advice???? please take into account that i am a linux newbie. thank you |

Keep in mind that newer Linux distributions with the GUI take up as much system resources as Windows, so if you can't imagine running Windows 95 on it then Linux with KDE or Gnome will run just as slow. I would sugggest Mandrake or Red Hat for the distro.

I would look at an older version of RedHat, like maybe 6.0, or 6.1 Is this like a DX 66? Many of the other distros, you would have to go pretty far back to run a 486, without using a special kernel. I would not recommend this, if this is going to be your internet 'gateway', as you would have a lot of security updates to get. If you just want to play with linux, these two are fairly friendly and support a fair amount of the older hardware.

i think i still have an old version of redhat lying around (6.1 i think) somewhere so i think i'll use that thanks for the advice |
