Okay this one really takes the biscuit of linux questions
Now im gonna be laughed at for asking this but i have my reasons,
Is there any way i can get M.S Access on my RedHat 7.3 box, or for that matter any of the office apps, I no i have some installed, like i see one for word files, and having a deul boot isnt a choice for my circumstances (i have tried using WINE, but when trying to install OfficeXP it says - You either need such and such operating system - (all windows O.S's of course) Anyone susceeded in this? |

Okay i did the free registration as they asked, downloaded the software,
When reading the instalation guide it says If you are installing Win4Lin via download the license code will be sent to you by email. Ummm.... no email came, so i check the site only to find that another section says; To install NeTraverse Win4Lin 4.0 download version, you must first obtain a valid license code. If you do not already have one, license codes may be purchased from our online store. So i take it this software isnt free then? |

Did you try Start Office? It comes with RH 7.3, it can open some MS Office files, not sure about Access databases though.
Another option is exporting the database to something supported by Linux like MySQL. |

I don't think that you can work on Access under Linux.

I have installed wine and MS Office on my mandrake 8.2 and I'm using wine to run 'em. Well actually, I installed Office from windows (dual boot) and pointed wine to my windows paritition. Try upgrading wine or installing from source. Are you sure you have wine configured properly?

do you have a windows partition or at least enough space to install windows? If you do you can install windows then Access. Mount your windows partition in linux then setup wine to use your native windows partition and run Access. Don't fool yourself- it IS that longwinded :-) I've attatched a snapshot of Access running on KDE. I have IE in the background because I keep on forgetting where the executable for access is so I simply set an IE shortcut at C:\windows\start menu\programs so I could run it quickly. It performs just as well as on windows. Rest assured that it should work.

install windows (any) as compact as possible- no accessories, no add ons, jus the meat... just the OS. This should take around 65 megs. You should not lose any files, but backup, backup, backup! The Windows Installer erases your MBR, so you should keep a lin bootdisk handy to get into your linux OS. Have you installed a boot loader? You'll need to for a proper dual boot. You should be able to install one from linux. Be sure that your boot disk *works* before you install windows! Assume nothing!

If you have a native win32 (or win16, depending on what windows you want to install) already on your disk you shouldn't have to format the disk. If that fails you could try to make the second HD the first, try to install windows, put things back to the way they were, get to linux and install a windows loader- you'll need to mount the drive too. I never tried the latter but it should work.
