I'm an average Windows user, but I've been wanting to span my horizon. I have user Corel Linux in the past, and I love the way it installs (just like Windows). Are all the distributions like that these days? I'd like to know which is the best for a fairly new user, and what's the difference between one which is good for newbies and one for advanced users. Thanks.

I'd say two that are pretty good for newbies (graphical installers, gui versions of config file editing, etc...) are Redhat and Mandrake, some more advanced ones (text installers, no gui "helpers") would be slackware and debian.

Mandrake is probably the best for a new user.

I went to Mandrakes site, but I don't see anywhere to download it. It tells me I have to be a member and pay. What happened to all this Open Source Free stuff?

Yes it is and you don't have to be a member to download from mandrake's servers.
