Stupid question

My boss bought his daughter a new apple computer for Christmas last year. She wanted it because it was blue(she is 11 years old) Well she got it and doesn't have a clue how to use it.She always used windows machines.Today he asked me if I wanted it.He said that if I would set up thier windows machine with aol with parental controlls and add a printer he would just give me the mac(he paid something like $1000 for it).I don't know any thing about mac,and feel as if Iwould be taking advantage of him..Kind of a moral delema.Any input would be apriciated.

Hi gravity764,

Wow, that's a good one. I don't really know what I'd do, because there are a lot of variables involed... Have you done a lot of "free" work for him before? are you good friends? has he made you work a lot of extra time (last minute things while you were walking out the door to go home?) without due compenstation? would you have to buy the parts for this Windows system? would you be "married" to it and on call at nights and on the weekend? do you even want the thing? and all the extra costs of new software and the like?

Depending on the answers to those and other questions, he just may be taking advantage of you.... maybe not.....

Most importantly, you'll have to do what you feel is right, and which would vary from person to person.

HTH

Well He is a little prick.I have done computer work for him in the past with very little problems,he does know his way around windows and ms office. He can afford it ,thats for sure he owns the company....I haven't had a raise for 2 years ,but he does pay well.Iwould like to get a mac ,just to learn more about them...maybe i'll take him up on his offer.the mac has all the software on disks os x and os 9. I think it even has a cd burner,He always gets the top of the line stuff. I could probably set it up on my network and use it somehow.

Since he made the offer, and you didn't cohearce him, then maybe you should go for it.

Just do it!

Do it and accept the "gift". As you say he can afford it and he most likely feels that you would actually have a use for the Mac. Which in some odd way would make him feel he is 1) not wasting the machine and 2) doing a good deed and therefore increasing his karma.

Take him up on his offer. You are doing him a service and he is avoiding the problem of disposing of an unwanted used computer. Sounds like a fair trade.

If he is aware of all the facts and doesn't feel like you are taking advantage of him, and you are also aware of all of the facts and don't feel he is taking advantage of you, you have a struck a good legal and moral bargain.

Yesterday I paid a guy $70 to install a ceiling fan. Probably took him 15 minutes. I knew it would be a simple job for him, but a tough one for me. I was happy I didn't have to climb into my attic and do the work myself.

Take it!

Anything you add to your skill sets may help in a future job. You may go to a site that have Macs on a network along with PCs. Any knowledge you have of them and how to use them would be adventageous to you.

That siad, I don't know a damn thing about them.
