Linux and ATA/100

Just a quick question. I'm running Red Hat 7.3 with kernel 2.4.18. Is ATA/100 supported? If so, how can I doublecheck my drives are running at this speed? If not, is there a way to get ATA/100 support? Thanks in advance.

Hi Floppyman!

Yep ATA100 is supported by the 2.4 kernels. Check out this tutorial: http://www.linuxjunior.org/cgi-bin/p...=Display&id=20
I'm still cruising along at a more sedate ATA33 yet so I can't say how easy it is to get going ( don't want to get a speeding ticket ).

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks OOPS,

I'm using an Asus P4B533 (845E) board. The tutorial refers to a Promise Controller. Would the procedure be the same? When I try the commmand as outline in the tutorial:

cat /proc/pci | less

I don't get any storage controllers to show up, just USB controllers. Is there anyway I can figure out at what speeds my drives are running now? Thanks again.

You got me, but there should be more than just usb showing up with that command. It should show all your pci, isa, video, and ide bridges. So if your ATA100 controler isn't listed I would bet that it isn't detected.

Reading the tutorial, it seems to be generic, because all you are doing is passing the I/O addresses to the kernel.

Perhaps you need to find out exactly what controler you have and then re-compile your kernel to load the correct module for it. As far as I know, the 2.4.x series supports most of the ATA100 controlers.

As for utilities that monitor tranfer rates, I don't know of any, but maybe checkout sourceforge.

Sorry I'm not being too helpful, my luck hasn't been too good at solving problems lately.
