To all the Linux Gods

I've been trying to install mandrake 8.2 on a 233 celly oc'd to 366. I have a separate harddrive for the computer that has w2k and xp on it with no trouble. I unplugged that one and put another one in to install Mandrake. The first cd is fine and starts up the process great. However, while installing the second cd of stuff, I keep getting error's installing the apps. I'm thinking that I have a bad cd, but could it be a hardware issue?

It's a soyo motherboard, can't remember which, with a celly,

Its highly unlikely that its a hardware issue. Seems like a pretty standard mobo. Does it have any unusual hardware controllers detected? Like a harddrive controller that isnt tthe norm.

As regards to your overclocking .. if it was stable in XP then it should be stable in Linux (& cooler too). To be on the safe side, why not try coming down to the rated speed for the installation and see if that helps. Also this new hard drive, hope you're sure its ok.

For a more qualified response I suppose you should wait for a Linux God to reply down below

Well since *nix god of pcmech has already replied ,(well, Statica is waaay smarter about *nix than me).

I would agree with him. If you are using a home burned copy of Mandy I would suspect a bad burn first. Then the hardware. An interesting note: on some of the linux boards that I check, some people are reporting installation trouble with new WD harddrives. Something about the boot sector on them. Personally, I'm using a WD 30gig ATA66 without a hitch.

If you still are having trouble with a fresh burn, post your errors, then maybe we can figure out the problem.

Good Luck!

You don't really "need" to install anything past disk 1 (in theory). Try installing and then going into mandrakes package manager and install what you want/need on disc 2. It might be a fluke of the installer that disc 2 won't work but of course, as mentioned it's probably a bad burn.

Well, I finally got it to successfully install, or so I thought. After installing everything, I think I may have installed something that I didn't want. Instead of taking me into the operating system at boot up, I end up at a prompt command like dos, but it's like werewolfdaddy@localhost $ something like that. Now that I have a working disc two, I 'll reinstall it, but I'd like to now what you all think first.

Hold on there Son,

What you are looking at is the CLI. It is your friend, you like the CLI.

Anyway, at the CLI, type in your user name. It will ask for your password.type that in, (it won't "echo" it so don't worry that something is wrong). Now type "startx" (without quotes) hit enter, and it should take you to your default desktop!! ( if it won't, it will spit out a whole bunch of errors at you).

So hold off on re-installing until you try this.

OOPS!

A quick thought... Is that hard drive arrangement set up traditionally, meaning with drives physically jumpered as 'master' and 'slave'? The other way would be if the drives were set up jumpered to CS or CSL, which is cable select. Cable select can cause problems similar to the type you speak of (intermittent failure). If I happen to see TUXercules the god of Linux, I will definitely point him in your direction..
