alrighty ill try to keep it short.
First of all i had win98 on my c:\ dirve so i partitioned it 50-50 then installed mandrake 6.5 and im using a LILO to start linux or windows. I think i installed KDE and GNOME. SO i open linux and it gives me user login, i enter as either root or user and type KDE, then after a long list of actions it lists like ten things that "cannot connect to X server". and it goes back to the command prompt. When i type GNOME it says "unkown command". When installing i couldnt get any drivers for my audio or video how would i install those and is that the problem. Thanx, Andrew |

I don't know if you have tried this already, but happens when you type "startx" without quotes? Can you get a GUI then? Hope this helps.

HOLY COW. You don't have any drivers for your vidcard installed!? That is definitely the problem. What's your vidcard? what X do you have? I would recomend updating ASAP

Whoops, I just reread your post and noticed you didn't have any video drivers installed, go ahead and disregard my first post. TMAN's right on the money, we'll need to know that information first. HTH

It should prompt you during setup to install the videocard. I see you're using version 6.5 of mandrake, your card is probably not supported by the xfree that came with that distro. You could go to www.xfree86.org and get the lastest xfree (v. 4.2.0), or you could get the latest Mandrake Linux (which will also have a newer version of xfree than what 6.5 has), I think it's v. 8.x.
