This may not be the most helpful, but one the most popular Proxies is 'Squid' . The home page is here http://www.squid-cache.org/
It looks to me like the supported precompiled binaries made for Redhat seem to be for version 6.2 or later, R.H. If I had to hazard a quess, I'd say low-end Pentium, or better, a couple gigs of hd space. You basically shut down all un needed services of the OS and make sure you have the current advised security patches from R.H.'s support area for that which you are going to run. |

this is most helpfull,
the thing i am looking for is how to get an old computer to function as a router, i know the best way is to build a router, but i'm sort of low on cash as it is, and i still need to buy other networking equipent and i have lods of old computer parts lying around at my place and at some friends, mostly 486 and verry early pentium. not exactly a 300mhz pentium with 512 mb ram, i have this thing under windows called wingate but it's far from perfect and i don't want a windows system for a server ( to mutch downtime) |
