splat Redhat Not Recognizing NIC anymore..

This has been very very very frusturating for me for the past 2 days. Before the summer I had tried to set up a game server on a RedHat 6.0 linux box. The computer is pretty old and the game server never ran right. I eventually gave up on it. A few days ago I decided to run a PPTP server on it. Pretty confident that it could handle it, I set out to install RH 6 on it again because I had since installed Win98 on it. This time, during the installation it didn't recognize the NIC. When I had previously installed it it had found and installed the drivers for the NIC on its own. Oh well, it still gave me a list to choose from. I found out the correct driver for the card and chose it, but it told me it couldn't find the card! After this I must have tried reinstalling linux about 20 times so far, and have tried to manually install and configure the driver many times. I even tried two other network cards, and tried them in different PCI slots and disabled all the onboard stuff in the BIOS. For one of them (a 10baseT 3com) I was able to choose it from the list and it didn't complain, but it turned out I couldn't get it working. I know that the card that was originally in it works because I installed Win95 and got it working.

Nothing I do seems to make it work, and I have no idea why, because it DID work a few months ago. Very frusturating and I've thus far wasted about 24 hours on this.. If anyone has ANY ideas, please help me out. Thanx!

It works with 7.3, but I'd rather not use 7.3 on such an old machine. I think I'll be setting it up on another computer now, so I'll probably be selling parts from this computer.
