Question Mandrake Installation

I have downloaded Mandrake 8.2 & then burned it to 3 CDs. In order to install I set the BIOS to boot to the CD. I inserted the #1 CD into one of my 2 drives. During boot the CD drive became active but the system booted into Windows. Tried both CD drives. No Mandrake boot. Do I need to download LIDO or something simular in order to boot up for installation. My download & burning seemed to go without a hitch.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS: See my system in signature below.

I'm not sure if Mandrake is like RedHat but Redhat has an option to make bootdisk ... Check you cd in windows to see if you have that option...

Windows will not have anything to do with this disk. When I try to open it Win sends me to the 'OPEN WITH' and nothing on the list will work. So I'll try going back to the Mandrake page for imfo.
Thanks for reply. I might have made some boo boo's in downloading or burning altho everything went as smooth as silk.

When you downloaded the file did you burn it as an ISO CD or just burn it as a regular data cd?

I'm asumming that the file was an ISO

I'm thinking along the same lines, that Doobie was. If the BIOS is set to boot the cd first, then the burn may have been improper -(The cd burning software did not understand an ISO) If you stick that disk in, when running under windows, and use the right-click EXPLORE option, on the disk icon, you should see a complete file system. Windows should be able to see a full file tree full of directories. If you see only 1 file, then the cd burning software probably doesn't know how to burn an ISO. Many of the new 1st disks of Mandrake have an autorun, that will explain the Install process, offer to create a boot disk, etc (1st disk 8.2) and it should popup under windows if autorun is enabled for the cd drive.

If you just extracted files from the ISO image you downloaded, and burned those, then the boot image was not put into the boot sector.

Im learning alot from you guys imfo and I need it with just starting in Linux. I think I found out where I went wrong. To simplfy thingsI I renamed the 3 disks to Mand1 Mand2 & Mand3 just to simplfy the typing..Boy' now isn't sharp. So I started all over again & redownloaded the 3 disks again. I've been busy most of the late morning & afternoon so that why I'm so late in responding. Will try installing again early tomorrow morn. Thanks for all of your responses. I sure hate causing a lot of trouble for all my dumb reasoning.. I'll let you know if I get it going tomorrow
morn. ;thanks again.

Yes, maxismoke, doodie, I had set my burner to by habit to dos/win. That loused up my first two burns. So after reading your imfo I used iso and burnt another set. Had problems problems in setting up the burn in iso; the message was that the ISO name (of the download had the wrong characters and/or was too long) which was the name that came with the download. So I changed the name to ( iso ). Burnt the disks & again no boot. So after 2 downloads & 3 burns I'm lucky that with the rebates I've spent only taxes & postage
on the CDs & my labor is free, ( Retired, & what else to do but create all these problems). Why not just live
with Windumb & keep swimming upstream. Only kiddin around but will probably will send for a set of the three disks ----- & won't I be happy if they don't work...

Thanks all of you,

Filesystems are fun in Burning software, since there are so many of them. The error you are getting still (sounds like) there is a misconfig. Personally I've used Click N Burn in Win, and had no trouble with isos. I would have thought that if your soft knew it was burning a disk image it would set the file system up to what the iso image actually called for.. I think there are actually at least 3 different ISO file formats, and each allows different numbers of characters and type of characters for file names. (Just what you wanted to hear, right?) I'm not so sure that the filename reference is necessarily for just the disk name. It might be because the folders contained in the image (the mandrake file system) exceed what your ISO is set for. Many burner software applications have some way to check to see if all the filenames are 'legal' for the type cd you are trying to burn. If you tell us what burner software you are using, perhaps someone on the boards here has some kind of experience with it. I hope this doesn't confuse the issue even more, but you are trying to "Burn an ISO disk image", NOT "burn a data disk in an iso file system format" (It's a very large difference)

I bought my last set of Mandrake 8.2 CDs from the fine folks at Edmunds. You can order on-line and pay any which way you'd like. They had my CDs to me in less time than it would have taken (at the time) to download !!

I have a Sony CD-R/RW Drive & the burn software that came with it is named; "B's Recorder Gold". On my latest try at burning a boot cd it called for system disk (floppy) to be inserted. So after burning, I tried it. It booted up alright but it booted into DOS. And so, another coaster. Seems like I need some type Linux boot disk to use to burn to the CD. If I need a Linux boot floopy I might as well boot with the floppy and then use the install CD. Just can't figure it out.

Hi, crow,

Once you have your CD's burned (use Nero, at 4X for best results) and if you still cannot boot off them, create a boot floppy by using Rawrite for Windows (rawwritewin.exe) in the /dosutils directory on CD1 to create a boot floppy from "cdrom.img" in the /images directory of CD1.

Also a pretty detailed tutorial is included on CD1 (/tutorials/index.htm)

I am not familiar with the software that crow is using,
http://www.bhacorp.com/products/index.html this appears to be the site link for his software. The software appears to be available in 3 models. Here is what this company has to say about isos.
http://www.bhacorp.com/support/faq_goldwin/03-1.html#14

see item 3-14

I have some .iso images that I want to create a disc from. How do I go about doing this? To create a CD from an .iso file, drag and drop the file to the "TRACK FIELD" located to the bottom right of the screen.

{ That's the best I can do with this one folks -MS }

By the way, Mandrake 8.2 lets you install and run it from within Windows (remembe BeOS 5?) as a learning experience.

Finally got what I think are good burns in both Nero (downloaded) & B's Gold. But checking them out in faq's seems I might have downloaded the wrong program. I downloaded Mandrake 8.2 PPC & it looks like that program is for Apple computers. Did I do wrong?
Thanks for all the help you have given so far.
I'll get it right yet.

Mandrake 9 is now up and ready for download.

When you burn your CD's do it at 4X, as I am told that Linux does not take kindly to higher sppeds. I donot know why that is, but the discs I burnt at 4X are working fine.
