Hi all,

Just wanted to let those know that hadn't heard that RedHat 8.0 is out. Downloading the ISO's right now, can't wait to install it.

Well I downloaded and installed it today. They have definitely made some changes that should please the icon clickers from MS. I don't think the ole faithful command shell guys will be impressed at all.

I dont like the way your talking to that console user. The console is where its at.

And since its 2:55 here in Boston and this thread has turned mean spirited i feel a rant coming on.

Red hat is the worst linux distribution. Its a linux kernel prostituted to be a sloppy windows clone. It does not comply to any standards. It puts files in odd locations. Its not as powerful as some other distributions. The only reason you should use it is because you dont know any better.

www.slackware.org is where you wanna be heading. Slackware is the oldest and most powerful distribution with no bull****. And when i say no bull**** i mean no bull****. Its fits on a single CD. There's plenty of documentation on what you need to know and none of what you don't. I know its "slightly" more complicated than putting the CD in and turning the computer on to install, you actually have to read at a 3rd grade level to load this supior OS, but your probably switching to linux to end your Windows/Mac dependency anyway so break through the fear.

Debian is another up and coming distro with a nice automatic updating capability and with a little work it could easily become second place, since slackware achieved perfection when it started the linux distribution idea in 1993.

dont waste your time getting red hat 8's many ISO's. Go to slackware.org. Go. Right now.

I agree. After installing it last night, I noticed there were quite a few changes. You actually have to hunt through the menu now to find the console. Some other things are different too. I'm not real impressed by 8.0 right now. I think I may go back 7.3 or try slackware to see if I like it.

Just heard from someone that mp3 support was removed in Red Hat 8.0 Surely enough I cannot play mp3 files in Red Hat 8.0. All along I thought it was my soundcard. I'll try another third party mp3 player and report back.

The entire 2.4.xx thread has been a wasted experience for me. Other than than some of the features that I like, there wasnt too much in it for me. I'm sticking with 2.2.xx and more importantly with my BSDs. Will wait for the next tree.

Sure enough if you want to play mp3's via XMMS, you'll need to get a patch of somesort. Check out www.xmms.org for details. I got and installed it, and now mp3's play fine.

Also wanted to mention that I was wrong, and that there is still a link to the shell on the taskbar (at least in KDE). Not sure if this the case in gnome though. I'm sure I saw it missing somewhere, but maybe I was wrong.

Well, I have seem to have a problem with the font dissapearing on the icons under gnome. Although I did upgrade from 7.3 (where I had a custom Matrox video driver installed), so maybe things got messed up that way. Other than that, the Control Panel icon on the deskop does not work, invoking it from the console does not work either. Worked fine in 7.3, but once again I think that maybe it got messed up during the upgrade.

Hi Chris,

Yeah, it kinda does look like that, and it's not very pleasing I agree. I'm still debating whether to get rid of RH and try something else or not. What linux are you running right now? Have you had any experience with slackware? Thanks.

Thumbs up SLACKWARE!!!!!!!!

Your definitaly going to want to get that slackware 8.1 right over that red hat partition. I just turned my friend onto it (he had red hat 7.1 that wasn't compatible with some new hardware) and he was very impressed... I would definatly recommend it. Its only one ISO, cant beat that.

Mr. abomb7682 - I took your advice and opened the side of Slackware - and I'm very sorry to tell you that this site has the worst download speed I ever saw in my life - so just forget about because nobody is loading a over 600 Mb file with a dl speed of 0 - 100 bites.. Please check it out and if you find out the time when this can be downloaded with a acceptable speed then let me know - for acceptable I take everything above 16k/s
Thank you

Floppster, right now I do not have any Linux installation on the comp - this for several reasons - but I think Slackware is quite interresting only it doesn't worked out with the download (read above) after 8 hours of downloading - I had 896 Kb or likewise so I dropped it -

I still use QNX neutrino - just to play and have fun - ..
Regards

Hi abomb7682,

I'll probably give slackware a try as soon as I have the chance. I have the ISO sitting on my desktop. Just need to burn it and find the time to install and play with it. Does it come with any bootloaders, i.e. grub or lilo? Thanks.

Chris,

Try to download from some of the mirror sites. I think I got mine off a french site actually, and was getting around 60-70k/s if I remember correctly. Since you are even closer than I am, your speeds may be better.

Slackware comes with lilo and loadlin.exe (so you could boot from dos/windows)

About the d/l times... i'm not sure what gave you such trouble... i had no problem downloading it... try a mirror from your area, i get superfast downloads, i can download a 600+ MB ISO in a matter of minutes not hours... wait until this red hat buzz has died down and try some mirrors. As a rule FTP is faster then HTTP.

Coincedentally enough I got RH8 from that same site I got slackware from. Trying to get from a U.S., was pretty much impossible, they were all getting hit pretty hard.

About Slackware - downloaded it burned the CD - and then read some of the textmaterial which came with it... Now sorry to say - today I installed it three times but I wasn't able to make it boot of the Hard drive - it just hangs there - opposite to RED HAT any version you put it in - then install it and it boots of..
Abomb do you have any Idea ?

what bootloader? LILO loved to give me garbage like that- try out GRUB. Did you do a clean install, (re)format, fdisk /mbr, etc? Slack is great, don't give up. HTH

i've never had any problem booting. sorry its giving you trouble... the fastest fix i can think of is after installing slack, boot to your rad hat and reload red hat's LILO/GRUB to include your slack partition, if slack's LILO was the problem.

if that fails the problem may be the size or your slack partition or swap partition, try removing the slack partition and creating it again.

OK - just to make clear - Slackware was installed ALONE on a Hard drive for its self - at times of installing all other hard drives (3 of them) were disconnected (removed IDE cable - the only thing was the CDROM and floppy drive connected - the hard disk was fdisked and formatted using the included utilities - CFDISK - and installation went without error - but once rebooted it just didn't boot the OS. All this I did three times - so now - just leave it as it is -.
Everything was created new from beginning - ...
