Sony GRX sound under linux, need help

Hello. I recently purchased a Sony Vaio GRX-500p laptop. The 500p is the name they give to any customized unit... this is maxed out with the best hardware options but the lowest software option (i didn't want office XP and they tried to bundle that crap in there so i customized it). I loaded Slackware 8.1 (its free in this month "linux format" magazine if your interested). Using the precompiled kernel everything seemed to load except the sound. I compiled my own custom kernel with support of the intel i8xx sound (i believe the unit has an i810 chipset). The sound was detected and i figured all would be well but then when i played any audio it came out slightly scratchy and dropped out from time to time. I'm sort of at a loss... I usually have a problem with it works or it don't, i rarely encounter something that "kinda works". If anyone has delt with a similar problem, or knows of a better driver anything woudl be helpful. Thanks!

I'm assuming you tried the alsa drivers? Try changing the playback frequency and latency. Not sure how to do this in console... the option should be in kde (Assuming this is your gui) under "sound". Sure you have the right irq's? HTH
