Red Hat 8.0 install hangs. Help!
Hey hey... Thx for reading this:
I've never installed Linux before, but just downloaded, imaged and tested Red Hat Linux 8.0 ISOs. I have 2 machines, one 500mhz Dell and a home-built machine w/Athlon XP 2000+, ASUS A7V333 Mobo, 512 mb RAM, both running XP Pro and Win2k... The 8.0 setup program and md5sum confimed the images I made (from my Dell). The first spash screen comes up, and I hit Enter to begin install, and the second screen that says "select OK to test or SKIP to begin install." It freezes right there every time on my custom machine. I thought it might be my CD drive b/c I had had some trouble burning earlier, so I moved the process from my TDK burner to my Toshiba DVD and got the same hang. I think it also might be my USB keyboard and mouse linked to a USB KVM, but the same hardware is hooked up to my Dell (thru KVM), and I made it past this screen and began setup on that machine using the same KVM, keyboard and mouse. Plus, the first screen of setup allowed me to use the keyboard to get to the second screen, so I don't know about that either. Install on my Dell is about to complete now using these same images, etc. Any ideas?? Thx, Chris |

Hi,
Interesting problem, can you swap CDRoms from your Dell to your home-rolled boxen? Might be worth a try. The only other guess I can offer is, maybe RH might be choking on your video card. Check RH's hardware compatablity list to be sure it is supported. Hope this helps you some, OOPS!
