I'm putting a system together with older parts and want to try my hand with Linux. I don't game, but use things like Quicken, Turbo Tax and things like that.
Two questions; Red Hat or Mandrake? Where is a good site to download from? I will burn a CD with Nero express using option to burn a bootable CD. Thanks Chas

Hi,
I'm currently using RH 8.0, but I'm debating whether or not to go back to 7.3 or try slackware instead. It has always been my impression though, that Mandrake has been a little more user friendly than Red Hat. But then again that was when I was playing around with Mandrake 8.0 and RH 7. Nowadays, it might be about equal. What does everyone else think? |

Mandy is user friendly, idiot proof, expert hassle, stability nightmare. The thing that tears my heart is that it's the only "decent" distro for games- mmx, X 3d accel (I know this works in all distros... its just eassiest in mandy). Never tried RedHat outside of cugwin. I'll take slack any day for stability and versatility, though. Slack would be a good switch if you actually used the CLI in mandy and/or you have the patience to read the directions, though they are extremely straight forward.

Thanks for replies. After reading replies to my post and several other threads I downloaded Mandrake. When weather gets a little worse and outside activities stop and I get a CD-Rom for system I'm putting together I will be back with many question I'm sure.
I already have one. What is a good browser for Mandy, preferably free? Chas |

Hi,
Mozilla tops my list. But Opera and Konqueror work well for others. And they all can be had for free. OOPS!

My vote is for the Mozilla browser... slackware 8.1 came with it and if for some reason mandrake didn't i still recommend downloading it... i've been very satisfied so far. Infact i recommend downloading slackware once you've gotten comfortable with linux.
